Community House Enrichment and Aftercare Program

Thomas A.Edison Middle School is pleased to announce its partnership with the West Orange Community House in offering enrichment and aftercare programs. These programs will be held at Thomas A.Edison Middle School. This is an opportunity for our students to participate in worthwhile activities supervised by teachers and staff members.


Parents will have the option of choosing from one or both of the programs – Enrichment Program and/or Aftercare Program.

The Enrichment Program involves various activities (arts & crafts, knitting, exploring technology, and movie making, and sports (dodgeball, football, basketball, kickball, and soccer).It will run Monday- Friday from 2:55pm – 4:30pm at EdisonMiddle School.A late buswill be provided for students to take at 4:30pm.


The Aftercare Program involves a longer time of supervision to allow parents an opportunity to pick up their child later.All remaining students will gather in the gymnasium with the option of participating in a sport or have the opportunity to use the computers in the Library. This program will run Monday-Friday from 4:30pm – 6:00pm.No late buses are provided at 6:00pm.Parents must pick-up their child from the library at EdisonMiddle School.


  • Parents have the option of choosing one or both of the programs.
  • The Community House reserves the right to cancel any Enrichment or Aftercare programs due to insufficient enrollment.

PROCEDURES

  1. The Community House Program will include two sessions.Session # 1 will start Wednesday, September 5, 2012 and will end January 31, 2012.Session # 2 will start February 1, 2013 and will end Friday, June 21, 2013.
    • Registration forms for Session # 2 will be given at a later date.

  1. There will be an open enrollment that will take place throughout the school year.However, in order to secure a spot in a particular Enrichment Class there is a first come first serve policy.

Enrichment Program

Fee for Session #1 (Sept. – Jan.)

$110 for each Enrichment Class registered for (plus supply cost if significant)

(For example:If your child is enrolled in Basketball every Monday from September 5th through January 31, the fee is $110 for the entire session.If your child signs up for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday the fee is $550.00.

Fee for Session #2 (Feb. - June)

$110 for each Enrichment Class registered for (plus supply cost if significant)

  1. Students are required to report to the Edison cafeteria at 2:55pm for attendance and snack that is brought from home.Two faculty members will be on duty to supervise from 2:55 to 3:30.Students reporting to the cafeteria after 3:00 must have a written pass excusing their tardiness.All students must go to their lockers before reporting to the cafeteria.At 3:30pm, their instructor will pick them up and bring them to their assigned activity room. Students must remain in their activity until dismissal at 4:30pm.All students will leave the building through the main entry door.A 4:30pm late bus will be provided.

  1. Students are expected to be in attendance each day for the activity they signed up for. Parents will be notified if attendance is irregular.Please advise us if your child must pick up a younger sibling from the elementary school.Alternate arrangements may be available to assist you in this situation.

  1. Please Note- The Community House programs will be held on half days.Due to inclement weather or emergency days, parents will be contacted by phone for early parent pick up if necessary.Programs will not be held on days that school is not in session.
  • If dates are subject to change, students will be notified in advance

DESCRIPTION OF CLASSES

Arts & Crafts

Artistically inclined students will be exposed to a variety of arts and crafts projects!

Learn to do something dazzling with jewelry beading, keep family memories together with keepsake boxes, make fascinating gifts for loved ones using wood, paint, glitter, and a host of other crafts. If you love working with your hands and being creative, this class is for you!


Board Battle

Board Battles! Calling all game lovers!Want to spend an hour playing some great board games?We will offer a range of fun board and computer games to entertain and challenge you.We will offer games such as Boggle, Scrabble, Free Rice, etc.


Computer Enrichment Games

Students will explore a variety of computer games that will enhance their skills in different subjects – mathematics, science, language arts etc.


Disney Classics

Take a magical journey into the wonderful world of Disney as this class offers the viewings and sharing of great film memories of favorite Disney classic movies.You’re never too young or too old to enjoy all your favorite Disney characters.


Drawing

Pencil techniques to include line weight, contour lines, shadows and shading, ink techniques to include cross hatching. Limited to 20


Exploring Technology

Students will explore a variety of computer applications and devices that will enhance their technology knowledge and skills. Students will gain experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access, Publisher), Photo Story 3 and computer games that will enhance their educational skills.


Intermediate Guitar

Do you know how to play some guitar, and want to learn to really rock? Advancing students will learn to play electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass guitar in this exciting class. We will also learn about the use of effects and technology to get that authentic sound. The class will experiment with recording, and students will have the opportunity to produce recordings of their performances. Prior knowledge is mandatory, and students are encouraged to use their own instruments and equipment. Instruments will also be made available for in-class use.


Introduction to Guitar

Do you want to be a rock star? Students will learn to play electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass guitar in this exciting class. No prior knowledge is needed, and instruments will be available for in-class use.


Sports:

Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Kickball, Dodgeball, & Basketball

Students will learn the fundamentals of flag football, soccer, volleyball dodgeball and basketball. After learning the knowledge and skills of the game, students will work on teams and compete against fellow classmates to simulate the team sport and to enhance their communication and collaboration skills. The knowledge and skills learned during each session will provide students with a solid foundation for future team sports as well.


Surface Design

Printmaking, painting, papermaking, collage and design transfer techniques for paper and fabric. Limited to 10 (This will get messy!!)


ModelBuilding

Build your dream car, aircraft or boat will be the task while involved in the model building class. Each student will choose a model and build it during the classes. Come in and create your dream.



Movie Making

Ever dream of becoming a movie star? Ever wanted to create silly and fun movies? With Movie-Making, all students will collaborate and work together to create and star in their very own movies!


Hockey Table Fans

This class will KNOCK you out! Hockey fans should sign up for this class. Games will be played on air hockey tables and knock hockey tables.So, accept the challenge and sign up for an hour of fun with pucks and friends!


Holiday Crafts

This class will create crafts and small gifts that have holiday themes.


Percussion Ensemble

This class is open to any current percussionist with experience in band program or any student that ever wanted to play a percussion instrument and was told "no."
We will cover the percussion basics to advanced techniques.


" EDISON IDOL"

"Get in touch with your inner "SUPERSTAR" by performing your favorite pop hits with your friends. Build-up your confidence and shine like an "American Idol!!"


Knitting & Crocheting

Students of all skill levels will be invited to have a place to work on their own personal knitting and crocheting projects.The instructor will assess student skill levels and suggest projects to meet their individual needs.Students will work at their own pace and skill level.More experienced students will be encouraged to share their expertise with their peers.


Sewing

Hand embroidery and simple machine projects, to include embellished bags and small student designed and sewn art quilts. Limited to 8


Vampire Lovers

Take a bite out of this class! Bring your favorite vampire novel and story. Share with fellow vampire lovers your predictions, hopes, and fears of everyone’s favorite vampire characters. So come share your vampire trivia with your friends!
